Privacy Policy

Last updated: February 6, 2026

1. Introduction

BitMarks ("we", "us", or "our") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your information when you use our bookmark management service, including our web application, browser extension, and API (collectively, "the Service").

2. Information We Collect

Account Information

When you create an account, we collect your email address and authentication information provided through our third-party authentication provider (Clerk). We do not store passwords directly.

Bookmark Data

We store the bookmarks, folders, tags, and related metadata you save through the Service. When end-to-end encryption is enabled, this data is encrypted on your device before transmission and cannot be read by us.

Usage Data

We collect basic usage data including request logs, error reports, and performance metrics to maintain and improve the Service. This data does not include the content of your bookmarks when encryption is enabled.

Browser Extension Data

The BitMarks browser extension accesses your browser bookmarks, history, tab groups, and open tabs only with your explicit permission. This data is processed locally in your browser and synced to our servers only if you enable cloud synchronization.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use your information to:

  • Provide, maintain, and improve the Service
  • Synchronize your bookmarks across devices
  • Authenticate your identity and secure your account
  • Send important service-related communications
  • Diagnose technical issues and prevent abuse

We do not sell your personal information to third parties. We do not use your bookmark data for advertising purposes.

4. End-to-End Encryption

BitMarks supports end-to-end encryption for your bookmark data. When enabled, your data is encrypted using keys derived from your password on your device before being sent to our servers. We have no ability to decrypt this data. If you lose your encryption key or password, we cannot recover your encrypted data.

5. Data Storage and Infrastructure

Your data is stored on Cloudflare's global infrastructure, including:

  • D1 Database — structured bookmark metadata
  • R2 Object Storage — cached page content and exports
  • KV Storage — session data and caching

All data is transmitted over HTTPS. Data at rest is protected by Cloudflare's infrastructure-level encryption.

6. Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services:

  • Clerk — authentication and user management
  • Cloudflare — hosting, CDN, and data storage
  • Stripe — payment processing (if applicable)

Each of these providers has their own privacy policies governing how they handle data. We encourage you to review their policies.

7. Data Retention

We retain your data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we will delete your personal data and bookmark data within 30 days, except where we are required by law to retain it. Anonymized usage data may be retained indefinitely for analytics purposes.

8. Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Access your personal data stored by the Service
  • Export your bookmarks at any time in standard formats
  • Delete your account and associated data
  • Correct inaccurate information in your account
  • Withdraw consent for optional data processing

To exercise these rights, contact us at support@bitmarks.sh.

9. Cookies

We use essential cookies to maintain your authentication session. We do not use tracking cookies or third-party advertising cookies. The __session cookie is required for the Service to function and contains your authentication token.

10. Children's Privacy

The Service is not intended for children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn that we have collected such information, we will promptly delete it.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by email or through the Service. Your continued use of the Service after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
